How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost in Ontario?

· 6 min read · Websites

Short answer: a small business website in Ontario usually costs anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand to set up, plus a monthly fee for hosting and upkeep. A one-page site for a salon, barbershop or local service business sits at the low end. Multi-page sites with custom design, online ordering or AI tools cost more. At Lapnix, setups start at $499 plus $29 a month (CAD, plus HST).

The range is wide because "a website" can mean very different things. Here's what actually moves the price, so you can tell a fair quote from a padded one.

What you're actually paying for

Almost every quote breaks down into two parts: a one-time setup and an ongoing monthly cost.

Setup covers design, writing or organising your content, building the pages, connecting your domain, and basic SEO so Google understands what you do and where you are.

Monthly covers hosting, security (SSL), keeping things running, and usually some time for edits. Some agencies bundle more into the monthly, like reporting or AI tools. Others charge nothing monthly but bill you by the hour every time you need a change.

Neither model is wrong. Just make sure you know which one you're signing up for.

What makes a website cost more

A few things push a quote up quickly:

  • Number of pages. A one-page site is much quicker to build than a ten-page site with a page for every service.
  • Custom design versus a template. Fully custom layouts take longer. For most local businesses, a well-built template-style layout is plenty.
  • Writing the content. If the agency writes all your copy, that's real work and it's priced in.
  • Integrations. Booking, online ordering, payments or a CRM connection all add setup time. Linking a Book button to the Fresha, Booksy or OpenTable account you already have is usually simple. Building a custom booking system isn't.
  • AI tools. A chatbot that answers questions and captures leads, or an AI receptionist that picks up the phone, adds setup work and a monthly cost for usage and upkeep.
  • Ongoing changes. If you'll want menus, prices or promos updated often, check how many edit hours are included each month.

What you probably don't need

Plenty of small businesses get sold more than they need. For a single-location shop, you can usually skip:

  • A big multi-page site on day one. Start with one fast page and add pages once it's working.
  • A custom booking or ordering system when your current app already does the job.
  • A long contract. Ask what happens if you want to leave, and whether you keep your domain.

A good test: if someone visits on their phone, can they see what you do, what it costs, where you are and how to book or call within a few seconds? That's the job. Everything else is extra.

DIY builder, freelancer or agency?

DIY website builders are the cheapest in cash. You pay a monthly subscription and do the work yourself. That's a fine choice if you enjoy it and have the time. The hidden cost is the evenings you spend on it, and the sites that never quite get finished.

Freelancers vary a lot in price and quality. A good one can be great value. Ask to see live sites they've built for local businesses, and ask how they handle changes after launch.

Agencies usually cost more, but they should give you a fixed scope, a clear timeline and someone to call when something breaks. Ask for the price in writing, including the monthly cost, before any work starts.

Whoever you pick, keep your domain name in your own account. It's the one thing that's painful to untangle later.

How we price it at Lapnix

We keep our pricing fixed and public, because "it depends" isn't a helpful answer when you're running a business. All prices are in CAD, plus HST:

  • Starter Site, $499 + $29/month: one mobile-first page built from your Google reviews, photos and Instagram, with a Book, Call or Order button linked to the tool you already use, plus your hours, map, services and prices. Hosting, SSL and up to 30 minutes of edits a month are included.
  • Growth Site, $1,499 + $79/month: everything in Starter, plus up to five pages, a Google Business Profile cleanup, a review-request link and QR card, Search Console and Analytics setup, and a monthly one-page report.
  • Front Desk, $1,999 + $249/month: everything in Growth, plus an AI receptionist that answers calls 24/7, missed-call text-back with your booking link, and an AI chat assistant on your site.
Lapnix website packages compared: Starter Site $499 plus $29 a month, Growth Site $1,499 plus $79 a month, and Front Desk $1,999 plus $249 a month, all in CAD plus HST

For our first five clients (or until Jan 31, 2027), Starter is $299 instead of $499, the other packages are $500 off setup, and your monthly price is locked for 12 months. The full breakdown is in our pricing section.

What it looks like for your kind of business

The right package depends a lot on how customers reach you. Salons and barbers mostly need a fast page with prices and a Book button, which is what our salon websites are built around. Restaurants care most about menus and ordering links, so see our restaurant websites. Trades and contractors live on the phone, so missed calls matter more, which is why our contractor websites lean on the AI receptionist. We also have pages for auto repair shops and driving schools.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a small business website cost in Ontario?

Usually a few hundred dollars to several thousand to set up, plus a monthly fee for hosting and upkeep. A simple one-page site is at the low end. At Lapnix, setups start at $499 plus $29 a month (CAD, plus HST).

Is there a monthly cost for a website?

Almost always. Hosting, security and upkeep cost something every month, whether it's a builder subscription or an agency plan. Check what's included, especially how many edits.

Is a one-page website enough for a small business?

For many single-location businesses, yes. One fast page with your services, prices, reviews, hours and a clear way to book or call covers what most visitors want.

Should I use a website builder or hire someone?

If you have the time and enjoy it, a builder is the cheapest option in cash. If you'd rather spend that time running your business, hiring someone with a fixed price and timeline usually makes more sense.

Do I pay HST on a website in Ontario?

If the business building it is registered for HST, expect 13% HST on top of the quoted price. Lapnix prices are listed before HST.

How long does it take to build a small business website?

A simple site can go live within days of approving the design. With Lapnix you get a free draft within 48 hours, and most one-page sites go live a few days after approval, depending on how quickly we get your photos and details.
